Why choose an otoplasty?

In our Western society, it is generally expected that the ears lie relatively close to the head. Of course, there is a wide variation in this. Protruding ears do not cause any functional problems by themselves. However, when the ears stick out noticeably more than average, it can be a source of discomfort. Some children are even teased because of this.

In such cases, a relatively simple procedure called “otoplasty” can bring the ears into a more typical position. If protruding ears are clearly noticeable from toddler age, parents may consider having them corrected before the child starts primary school.

What are protruding ears?

The shape of the outer ear (auricle) is determined by the cartilage beneath the skin. This cartilage normally has several folds and curves. When the ears (or sometimes just one ear) stick out further from the head than average, it is usually due to an abnormal shape of one or both of these cartilage folds:

1. The “antehelix fold”: located on the “flat” part of the ear, it causes the outer ear to fold slightly backward. If this fold is underdeveloped, the edge of the ear protrudes.

2. The “concha”: this is the hollow bowl-shaped part in the middle of the ear that leads to the ear canal. In some cases the concha is too deep, causing the entire ear to stick out further from the head.

These two abnormalities can occur together or individually, and sometimes one ear differs from the other.
