Abdominoplasty
Why choose an abdominoplasty?
Excess weight can lead to abdominal laxity in both men and women. This is often accompanied by subcutaneous fat accumulation. The need for correction typically arises after weight loss, whether or not preceded by weight loss surgery (such as a gastric bypass or gastric sleeve), or through medical treatment (such as with Ozempic).
What is an abdominoplasty?
An abdominoplasty, as performed in our center, usually involves a combination of three procedures carried out simultaneously:
1. Circumferential liposuction (see liposuction) of the abdominal wall, extending over the flanks and into the back, to correct subcutaneous fat accumulation.
2. Rectus plication or correction of laxity in the muscle layer along the midline of the abdominal wall. Due to obesity or (repeated) pregnancy, the abdominal contents may push outward, stretching the aponeurosis between the rectus abdominis muscles at the midline (rectus diastasis). This is surgically corrected by stitching the rectus muscles back together along the midline.
3. Correction of excess skin in the lower part of the abdominal wall.
Depending on the indication, one of these three procedures may be omitted, but they are usually performed together.
